Help! I am unable to fall asleep or stay asleep.

April 20, 2021

Inability to sleep, known as insomnia, is an extremely common problem that our doctors encounter. Primary care physician, Dr. Tariq, says he encounter this issue daily with every cross-section of the population.

Dr. Tariq encourages proper sleep hygiene, which entails regulating your sleep habits. Here are some of the suggestions he makes:

Many people use their cellular phones before going to sleep. Blue light from cellular phones is known to inhibit melatonin, which is a natural chemical released by the brain that encourages sleep. This can cause issues.

He also advises that if you’re unable to sleep within 20 minutes, try an activity which relaxes you. This might include gentle stretching, reading a relaxing book, or some light music.

Finally, he cautions to avoid cigarette smoking, alcohol, or eating late in the evening, all of which can interfere with your sleep.
