Best Ways To Protect, Balance, and Care For Your Skin

Skin is the largest organ on our body.  It is also the most visible being the first thing that others see when they look at us, whether it is in person, on a video, or in a photo.  So, taking good care of our skin to keep it healthy is just as important as taking care of any other of our vital organs such as our heart or lungs.  The additional benefit to healthy skin is that healthy skin looks good too!

Healthy skin is to be protected, balanced, and cared for.  If you remember these three important points for your skin, you will keep your skin in its best condition.

Let’s start with protecting your skin.  Protected skin keeps the good elements in, such as moisture and nutrients, while protecting against bad things such as UV rays and pollutants in the air.  Developing a good daily skincare routine that includes good cleansers, moisturizers and sun protection will be the best place to start.  SPF should be used daily, even in cold weather and on cloudy days, to minimize the harmful effects of UV rays which age skin faster and can cause skin cancer.  Be sure to cleanse your skin at the end of the day to wash away the dirt, pollutants, oil, and sweat that accumulate on our skin during the day.  Be especially aware to wash off any makeup before going to bed, as makeup clogs our pores.

To balance your skin you need to feed it from the inside out.  Just like our other major organs, what we put into our bodies impacts our skin.  Drinking plenty of water keeps your skin hydrated which promotes clearer skin and helps maintain a youthful glow.  In addition to good hydration, look to eat foods that are packed with antioxidants, healthy fats, key vitamins such as Vitamins A, C, E, and B complex, and peptides.

Finally, our skin needs to be cared for.  Our skin is healthiest when we are at our best both mentally and physically.  Like the rest of our body, our skin knows when we aren’t feeling our best.  Sleep is one of the most important factors in maintaining our health mentally and physically, and our skin really likes a good night’s rest!  Blood flow to our skin increases during sleep which stimulates the collagen in our skin to repair damage from UV exposure, reduce wrinkles, and minimize age spots.  So be sure the give your skin plenty of rest.
