Meet Dr. Calan Sowa – Bringing a New Type of Treatment to Starling Physicians

Dr. Calan Sowa, M.D., M.A. grew up in Rhode Island and received his undergraduate degree from Duke University.  He went on to pursue his medical degrees at Boston University School of Medicine where he received both his MA and MD degrees.  After completing his residency in internal medicine at Boston Medical Center, he completed his fellowship training in Primary Care Sports Medicine at Steadman Hawkins Clinic of the Carolinas in Greenville, South Carolina. He then spent an additional year in Greenville training in the field of musculoskeletal ultrasound, specializing in both diagnostic and procedural applications.

Specializing in Primary Care Sports Medicine, Dr. Sowa focuses on the diagnosis, management and treatment of non-operative musculoskeletal injuries and disorders in patients of all ages. His expertise includes non-surgical fracture management, dislocations, soft tissue injuries-including sprains, strains and tears-as well as the treatment of more chronic aches and pains caused by overuse or age-related wear and tear.

He treats athletes (both competitive and recreational), weekend warriors, and patients with injuries sustained during normal day-to-day activities. His training has included specializing in the use of ultrasound for the diagnosis and management of injuries as well as for image-guided injections. He has been trained in the use of platelet-rich plasma (PRP) in the treatment of soft tissue and joint pains as well, which is a specialized technique that uses a patient’s own blood cells to accelerate healing in a specified area of the body.

In August, Dr. Sowa will be welcoming new patients in his Sports Medicine Primary Care office in 1 Lake Street, New Britain at 860-832-4666. He will also be offering Quick Access primary care two afternoons per week in the 375 Willard Avenue, Newington office.
