The hospital medicine specialty is dedicated to the delivery of comprehensive medical care to hospitalized patients. Hospitalists are physicians who engage in clinical care, teaching, research, or leadership in the field of general hospital medicine. Hospitalists also work to enhance the performance of hospitals and healthcare systems, in addition to their core expertise in managing clinical problems of acutely ill, hospitalized patients.

During your stay at Hartford Hospital, a hospitalist from Starling Physicians may provide your inpatient care. Our hospitalists include physicians and non-physician providers (APRNs, PAs). Hospitalists work along with your primary care physician, consultants, case managers, social workers, and physical and rehabilitation therapists, to provide coordinated and complete care.

The Division of Hospital Medicine at Hartford Hospital is home to more than 30 staff physicians and a team of APRNs/PAs. They serve patients who are admitted with medical conditions and provide consultative services to surgical patients. Members of the hospital medicine team are on duty 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

Hospital medicine is a newer concept of healthcare delivery, and the number of hospitalists in the U.S. has dramatically grown to approximately 32,000. The specialty has evolved with a commitment to innovate in the ways that care is provided to patients who are hospitalized.

Communication is the key to providing safe and quality care to our patients. Your hospitalist ensures that copies of your admission notes, plan of care, and discharge notes are shared electronically with your primary care physicians.
