Taking a Comprehensive Approach to Breast Health
At Starling Physicians, we have a dedicated team focused on breast health. This team includes oncologists, surgeons, radiologists, occupational therapists, a social worker, a dietitian, and a nurse navigator. Together, we provide medical and surgical treatment for both breast cancer and benign breast conditions.
We provide the highest quality care in a compassionate and timely manner. We place a strong emphasis on patient education, helping our patients understand risk factors and treatment options so they can select the best plan of care. And, we focus on the totality of your care including emotional, as well as logistical and economic, challenges.
Our breast cancer subspecialist, Dr. Daniel Morganstern, brings over two decades of experience and expertise to Starling. He spent 14 years at Dana-Farber Cancer Institute, serving as one of the nation’s leaders in breast cancer treatment, cancer genetics, and prevention. He has played an active role in clinical trials at Dana-Farber and co-founded their Breast Cancer Prevention Center.
Dr. Morganstern’s approach to breast cancer is to recognize that every woman’s treatment plan is necessarily unique. He believes in meeting patients where they are in terms of their knowledge, lifestyle, and psychological state. He delivers personalized care and places a strong emphasis on education and empowering women so they can make informed decisions about their care.
Dr. Morganstern is joined by our other exceptional oncologists who treat breast cancer. They work collaboratively with our surgical team and other medical providers across different specialties to provide a seamless experience.
Our surgeons, Dr. Michael Posner and Dr. Robert Napoletano, have extensive expertise and training in the management of breast diseases, both breast cancer and benign diseases. We provide in-office, minimally invasive needle biopsies – in some cases occurring the same day as a consultation with your surgeon.
Our surgeons provide expert counseling on your treatment options and make personalized recommendations, connecting you to other providers as needed for complete care.
When surgery is required, our surgeons will guide you in choosing from the most current techniques including skin- and nipple-sparing mastectomy; oncoplastic breast conservation; and the full range of modern and innovative breast reconstructive options such as implant-based and autologous techniques, including DIEP flap reconstructions. Our surgical team coordinates your care from initial diagnosis and biopsy through surgery and aftercare.
One of the most important aspects of breast health is ongoing evaluation and management of risk factors. For those patients at heightened risk for breast cancer, we provide ongoing surveillance with a personalized prevention strategy. This includes:
- Regular breast imaging to proactively assess potential issues
- Genetic assessment, education, and testing at our Starling Physicians subspecialty clinic for patients and family members with suspected hereditary breast cancer risk
- Management of identified hereditary risk to assist patients in navigating medical and surgical risk reduction
There are many benign conditions that may not be cancerous but require ongoing medical management and sometimes surgical removal. We evaluate and manage all benign breast diseases including “risk lesions” such as atypical hyperplasia and lobular carcinoma in situ.
We can’t eliminate risk factors but, together, we can proactively manage them.
Breast Imaging through Starling Radiology
Starling’s nationally accredited Radiology Department is staffed with highly trained radiologists and technologists who use the most advanced equipment to provide superior service in a comfortable environment. We provide breast imaging including screening and diagnostic mammography as well as ultrasound. We offer the newest 3D mammography that detects 41% more invasive breast cancers than traditional 2D imaging and reduces false positives by up to 40%, sometimes avoiding additional imaging and even biopsies for things that turn out to be noncancerous.
Your breast health team will carefully monitor your imaging results and proactively plan for upcoming screenings. They will ensure that patients with a history of complex imaging results and/or breast density limitations get the appropriate screenings in a timely manner.
Onsite Infusion Services
Our three state-of-the-art infusion centers provide a warm and caring environment for patients to receive intravenous therapies and injections under the supervision of our highly trained staff. We are one of the only healthcare practices to offer independent infusion centers, outside a hospital setting. We place extraordinary emphasis on safety, experience, convenience, and comfort.
Starling is thrilled to be the first hematology/ oncology practice in Greater Hartford to offer an innovative Scalp Cooling System to breast cancer patients at our infusion centers. Scalp cooling is a simple treatment that can prevent hair loss caused by certain chemotherapy drugs. The use of scalp cooling has been proven to be effective in preventing chemotherapy-induced hair loss and can result in patients retaining much, or even all, of their hair.
